Moroccan nationality law

Moroccan nationality law is governed by the Nationality Code established under the Dahir of 1958, as amended by the 2006 reform. It may be defined as a legal and political bond that establishes the relationship between an individual and the State.

It is considered a legal bond because it governs matters relating to an individual's civil status, personal status, and the rights and obligations arising from membership in the State.

It is also a political bond, since the existence of a State necessarily requires the existence of a people. Nationality provides the legal foundation for this relationship, as the people constitute one of the essential elements

of the State, alongside its territory and sovereign authority
